Configuration Templates for CPQ
They asked for the standard build again. The rep configured it from zero. Save proven configurations as templates so routine quotes start from a baseline and change only what differs.
The challenge
They asked for the standard build again. The rep configured it from zero.
A manufacturer of industrial parts washing systems receives the same enquiry repeatedly: a three-stage wash-rinse-dry skid with standard tank sizes, pump line-up, and filtration for automotive tier-two suppliers. Inside sales knows the build. They still open the configurator empty, reselect tank volumes, heater options, and conveyor speed, and hope this quote matches the last one that engineering approved without revision.
Last month's standard skid quoted a different heater class because the rep picked from memory. A repeat customer notices the PDF does not match what they ordered before. Dealers rebuilding the same configuration take longer on routine enquiries and escalate when they are unsure which options belonged in the baseline.
Component libraries maintain shared parts across product models. Modular configuration composes slot-based platforms. Multi-level BOM configuration generates production hierarchy after configuration completes. Application-first selling routes enquiries to the right product family first. Configuration templates are different: Mercura saves a completed configuration as a starting baseline so the next quote opens with validated selections and the rep adjusts only what the customer needs.
Inquiry to config to price to approval to order should not treat every repeat standard build like a first-time configuration from a blank screen.

How it works
How Mercura configuration templates work
Product management or senior reps save completed configurations as templates in Mercura: personal, team, or system-wide libraries organised by product line or application. A rep or dealer starting a new quote selects a template, and the configurator pre-populates with saved options. They review, adjust tank size, add a custom nozzle line, or change delivery terms, and send the quote. Product management updates system templates when the standard build changes so everyone starts from current best practice. Someone must curate which configurations become templates, retire outdated baselines, and train dealers to start from templates instead of empty configurators.
What's included
What configuration templates cover
- Save any completed configuration as a reusable template
- Personal, team, and system-wide template libraries
- Template selection pre-populates configurator at quote start
- Adjust from baseline without rebuilding every option
- Template versioning when standard builds change
- Organisation by product line, segment, or application
- Template sharing across inside sales and dealer networks
- Usage visibility for which baselines reps rely on most
The difference
Routine quotes before and after configuration templates
- Standard builds recreated option by option from memory
- Two identical enquiries produce slightly different selections
- Repeat customers see variation in routine quotes
- Experienced rep knowledge lost when they leave
- Dealers relearn the same standard build on every onboarding
- Routine enquiries start from a saved baseline
- Reps adjust only what differs from the standard build
- Repeat orders open with the same validated starting point
- Standard configurations codified in system templates
- Dealers select templates for common applications
Real-world application
Example workflow: parts washing skid templates
A builder of industrial wash-rinse-dry skids for automotive suppliers quoted the same three-stage configuration on most enquiries. Reps opened an empty configurator and reselected tanks, pumps, and filtration each time, occasionally missing an option engineering had standardised. After saving the approved skid as a system template in Mercura, inside sales and dealers start from that baseline, adjust only site-specific options, and send quotes that match the configuration engineering already validated.
Business impact
Why configuration templates are starting baselines, not shortcuts around rules
Configuration templates codify how your team already quotes standard builds. They complement component libraries, modular platforms, multi-level BOM output, and application-first selling. Mercura does not replace rules that validate selections inside the configurator or engineering review for non-standard changes. Someone must own template curation and retire baselines when the standard build changes. If the pain is "we quote the same skid every week but start from zero each time", templates align inquiry, configuration, price, approval, and order with a proven starting point.
